Psychiatrist Gurmeet Multani surrenders Pennsylvania license; was disciplined in California

December 15, 2011

On August 23, 2011, the Pennsylvania Department of State accepted the permanent voluntary surrender of psychiatrist Gurmeet S. Multani’s license. This surrender was prompted based on disciplinary action taken against Multani by the licensing authority of another state. Specifically, on October 1, 2010, Multani surrendered his license to the Medical Board of California, agreeing that the Board could establish a prima facie case against him on charges of sexual misconduct, gross negligence, repeated negligent acts, dishonesty or corruption and knowingly making or signing false documents, among other things.

The California Board’s document states that Multani treated Patient “LE” from July 2006 to March 2007 and also treated her son and daughter. LE, who went to Multani for help with depression and sexual trauma, disclosed to Multani during the course of her treatment that she had engaged in prostitution. Multani subsequently took LE to dinner and drinks and then to his office, where he engaged her in sexual intercourse. In the document, LE reported that Multani engaged her in intercourse many other times at his office, home and her apartment and that he paid her various amounts of money for sex. With another patient, “JR,” Multani is alleged to have prescribed a narcotic appetite suppressant following JR’s concerns about her weight, despite a 10-year history of opiate dependence and the addictive potential of the appetite suppressant.

When JR complained that the drug made her hyper, Multani told her to continue to take it. The document also states that Multani conducted a “check” of her weight loss progress that consisted of raising her skirt to expose her legs and thighs and touching her bare thighs and genitals through her underwear.  During this “check” Multani made comments about JR being sexy. JR reported the incident to police that same day.
