Mississippi Medical Board Suspends Psychiatrist Otis Anderson; Issued Unlawful Prescriptions for Controlled Substances

July 29, 2020

On July 6, 2020, the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure (“Board”) suspended the license of psychiatrist Otis Anderson for one year.

During 2019 and 2020, the Board’s Investigative Staff conducted an investigation of Anderson. The Board initiated a disciplinary action and has in its possession evidence which, if produced during an evidentiary hearing, could substantiate that Anderson violated provisions of the Law and the Board's Administrative Code, including the following:

·         Committed unprofessional conduct, as the result of calling in prescriptions under the name of another provider when that other provider has not examined or treated the patient and while his Mississippi medical license was suspended, all in violation of Mississippi law.

·         Failed to comply with the terms and conditions imposed by the November 29, 2018 Consent Order which he entered into with the Board, in violation of Mississippi law.

·         Violated the Board’s Administrative Code section which requires physicians to hold an unrestricted license in order to collaborate with a Mid-Level provider, in violation of Mississippi law.

·         Issued fourteen prescriptions for a Schedule III Controlled Substance (Suboxone) without a valid federal controlled substances registration, all in violation of the Board's Administrative Code and Mississippi law.

Anderson will also be required to successfully complete a professional competency evaluation before any consideration is given to reinstatement of his license. Upon completion of the evaluation, the agency administering it shall issue its report to the Board. Anderson shall comply with any and all training o rother requirements deemed necessary in order to confirm that he can practice with reasonable skill and safety to patients.

He shall also be required to reimburse the Board for its investigative and other costs incurred relative to this matter.
