Psychiatrist Charles Clark Loses Medical License for Excessive Prescribing

July 24, 2017

On July 20, 2017, Dr. Charles Clark permanently relinquished his medical license to the Colorado Medical Board.

The Board’s Stipulation and Final Order states that Dr. Clark “frequently prescribed multiple psychotropic medications simultaneously, despite potential drug interactions and reports from staff that inmates appeared overmedicated and/or delirious” and “continued to utilize polypharmacy in spite of documented physical side effects.” Additionally, he prescribed these drugs, often upon an inmate’s request and restarted inmates on prescriptions even after such were discontinued by another medical providers. He “prescribed…at high dosages, initiated medications in excess of recommended initiation dosages, and rapidly increased dosages.” Last, he “prescribed medications that were not justified, and were at time contraindicated, by information documented in the inmates’ medical records.”
