Senate Bill Seeks To Expose Abuses at Child Psychiatric Facilities

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) introduced legislation to strengthen federal oversight of residential treatment facilities serving foster youth and children with mental health needs, following a two-year Senate Finance Committee investigation documenting widespread abuse, understaffing, chemical restraint, and sexual assault at largely for-profit youth psychiatric facilities. The bill would require the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to create a national public dashboard disclosing facility-level data such as use of restraints and seclusion, accreditation and licensure status, inspection results….
