Universal Health Services: $360 Million Verdict in Sex Abuse Trial against Cumberland Hospital

On Friday, September 27, a Richmond Circuit Court jury delivered a groundbreaking $360 million verdict in a civil trial against Cumberland Hospital and its former medical director. After roughly seven hours of deliberations, the jurors returned a verdict of $20 million in compensatory damages, $60 million in treble damages for violation of Virginia’s Consumer Protection Act, and $40 million in punitive damages per plaintiff.
