Michigan Psychologist Jessica L. Fleser Suspended, Fined for Sexual Relationship with Former Patient

April 3, 2026

On December 18, 2025, Michigan psychologist Jessica LaVonne Fleser was suspended for at least three years after state regulators found she engaged in a sexual relationship with a former patient shortly after ending therapy services.

According to a consent order issued by the Michigan Board of Psychology Disciplinary Subcommittee, Fleser was disciplined following an administrative complaint alleging negligence, incompetence, lack of good moral character, and unprofessional conduct involving a former therapy patient.

The order states that Fleser did not contest the allegations and agreed to resolution through a consent order.

Allegations involving former patient relationship

The administrative complaint outlines the factual allegations:

“From February 13, 2023, through February 26, 2025, the Counseling Center of West Michigan (CCWM) employed Fleser as an independent contractor to provide psychology services.

“From February 20, 2023, to July 15, 2023, Fleser provided therapy services to N.B., a 45-year-old male, twice a week during her employment with CCWM. Prior to her employment with CCWM, Fleser provided therapy services to N.B. beginning in 2021.

“In her initial progress note for the February 20, 2023 therapy session, Fleser described N.B. as having ‘experienced severe trauma, neglect, and abuse (physical and sexual) (almost bordering on torture) at the hands of his parents, his grandparents, and numerous strangers (at the request/allowance) of his parents since he was a young child.’ Although N.B. is married with a family, he is unable to work and reports having approximately 86 different personalities….

“In January 2023, Fleser and N.B. texted each other regarding his transition of therapy with Fleser through her CCWM employment. In April 2023, the text messages between Fleser and N.B. became more frequent, and therapeutic in nature. In June of 2023, Fleser and N.B. began texting each other daily and these messages were personal in nature and expressed personal feelings for each other.

“On July 15, 2023, Fleser documented in N.B.'s patient chart that patient discontinued services with her. However, text messages between the two reflected that Fleser often shared with N.B. that they could not have a more intimate and personal relationship if he was still her patient.

“Shortly after ending the therapeutic relationship, Fleser and N.B. began having a romantic and sexual relationship. In December 2023, Fleser and N.B. traveled together on a European vacation. In January 2025, they vacationed in Thailand together.

“In February 2025, N.B. decided to end his personal and romantic relationship with Fleser. He reported the sexual relationship to Fleser’s supervisor, who was affiliated with In-Process Counseling, as well as the clinical director of CCWM on February 19, 2025. On the same day, Fleser’s supervisor terminated his supervision of her practice and her employment with In-Process Counseling. CCWM terminated Fleser’s employment effective February 26, 2025.

“During a May 2, 2025 interview with a department investigator, Fleser admitted that she continued to have contact with N.B. after the therapeutic relationship ended and they began having a sexual relationship in November 2023. She further admitted to going on the European and Thailand vacations with N.B. She advised that during the platonic and sexual relationship, she had a familial relationship with N.B., his wife, and his children. She further advised that she did not believe she exploited N.B. in any way, and that she helped him to be a better father to his children.”

Criminal case also pending

The consent order notes the Fleser is also facing criminal prosecution in Barry County related to the same underlying facts, though it states no additional administrative complaint would be filed solely based on a conviction.

License suspension and fine

In addition to the suspension of her license, Fleser was fined $10,000, to be paid to the State of Michigan prior to petitioning for reinstatement of her license. She is not eligible to petition for reinstatement until the fine is paid in full. The order also states reinstatement will not be automatic and will require Fleser to demonstrate good moral character, professional competence, and that reinstatement would serve the public interest.
