Massachusetts Psychiatrist Lee Altman Resigns Medical License following Investigations, Disciplinary Action

April 8, 2026

On June 18, 2025, Stoughton, Massachusetts psychiatrist Lee Altman submitted his resignation to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine (Board). This followed disciplinary actions taken against him for repeated negligence, dishonesty, deceit and fraud and reporting failures.

The Board found that Altman engaged in a pattern of misconduct, including:

  • Repeated, habitual negligence by failing to check the state prescription monitoring system (MassPAT) before prescribing benzodiazepines
  • Dishonest billing practices, including charging insurers for visits that never occurred
  • Creation of false medical records, including documentation of a visit with a patient who was actually deceased
  • Failure to disclose key information to the board, including a prior disciplinary termination, an ongoing investigation, and a law enforcement drug raid of his office

Case background and timeline of events:

2012: Altman was terminated by his employer, Harvard Vanguard, for documentation and practice concerns. He later he failed to disclose this as a disciplinary action on his license renewal application.

2015-18: Repeatedly prescribed benzodiazepines without consulting MassPAT, billed insurers for missed appointments and non-existent visits, including a patient that was deceased

July 2019: U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents executed a search of his office, removing records.

In a 2015 complaint, the mother of one of his patients called him “unethical” and said he gave her son multiple prescriptions and accused him of making money from people struggling with addiction and helping to “send them to their graves.”

2019-21: Altman failed to disclose investigation and DEA raid on his license renewal application.

2022: The Massachusetts Administrative Magistrate held a five-day evidentiary hearing.

2023: The Massachusetts Administrative Magistrate issued a Recommended Decision and started disciplinary proceedings against Altman, in which he was cited for his habitual failure to consult MassPAT before prescribing benzodiazepines, his deceitful billing practices to insurers, and his incomplete licensing applications.

2024: The Board issued its Final Decision, consisting of an indefinite suspension and imposition of a $10,000 fine. The suspension was stayed and Altman was placed on a five-year Probation Agreement.

2025: The DEA revoked his controlled substance registration. Altman violated federal and state laws when he falsified his May 6, 2022 application to renew his DEA registration.

On June 18, 2025, Altman formally resigned his license ending his ability to practice medicine.
