Universal Health Services: Former Patients Sue Heartland Behavioral Health for Failure to Protect from Harm

June 11, 2026

Former residents of Heartland Behavioral Health Services in Nevada, Missouri, are coming forward with allegations of abuse and neglect at the youth psychiatric facility. Multiple lawsuits claim children were subjected to physical assaults, excessive restraints, inadequate supervision, and unsafe conditions while receiving treatment. The allegations involve incidents dating back several years and describe harm suffered by vulnerable youth placed in the facility’s care.

Heartland is owned by Universal Health Services, the for-profit psych hospital chain infamous for putting profit way ahead of patient care & safety.

According to reports, former patients and their families allege that staff failed to protect children from abuse and that warning signs were ignored. The claims are part of a broader wave of lawsuits and investigations involving residential treatment programs and behavioral health facilities in Missouri, where former residents have described traumatic experiences that they say left lasting physical and emotional injuries.

The allegations have renewed concerns about oversight and accountability in youth behavioral health programs. As lawsuits move forward, former residents and advocates are calling for greater scrutiny of facilities entrusted with the care of children experiencing mental health and behavioral challenges, arguing that vulnerable youth deserve treatment environments that are both therapeutic and safe.
